Prof Coert de Vries
Education
Coert matriculated high school in the Northern Cape and obtained his MBChB in 1988 at the University of the Free State. He served as a medical officer in Orthopaedic Surgery and held the position of senior medical officer in General Surgery at 3 Military Hospital until 1993.
During his residency as a Registrar of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of the Free State, he was granted a Fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Guy’s Hospital in London.
He obtained his M.Med. Radiology degree in 1998 at the University of the Free State.
Career
He started his radiology career as a resident radiologist at 3 Military Hospital and was appointed as Professor, Chief Specialist and Head of Department Clinical Imaging Sciences (Radiology) at the University of the Free State in 1999. He held this position until 2017.
He performed the first EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair) procedure in South Africa and established the Interventional Radiology Fellowship, which provides the only formal interventional radiology training in South Africa.
During his academic tenure he has presented numerous academic presentations in the field of Interventional Radiology at both international and national conferences and is a published author of several academic articles and handbook chapters. He also acted as academic supervisor and examiner on doctoral and master’s degree level at various South African universities.
He is currently an examiner and moderator at the South African College of Radiology.
Personal
Coert is a keen yachtsman who likes to participate in sailing regattas. He’s also the ultimate handyman - the Afrikaans saying “sy hande staan vir niks verkeerd nie” describes him to a tee.
Escaping to his game farm in the Free State to fix broken wind pumps, go on game drives and spend time with his wife and children gives him immense joy.
Dr Tanyia Pillay

Tanyia completed her MBBCh and FC Rad Diag(SA) at the University of the Witwatersrand, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Radiology at the University of Cape Town. She is the head of Paediatric Radiology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. She has a passion for teaching, and is the academic coordinator for the WITS Radiology circuit

Dr Betsie van der Walt
MBChB (Pret), FCRad (Diag), MMed(Radiology) (UP)
Dr van der Walt qualified as a Radiologist at the University of Pretoria in the year 2000 and worked in Kalafong as well as Steve Biko Academic Hospitals.
She is currently a head of Clinical unit CT at Steve Biko Academic Hospital where she mainly rotates and teaches registrars in the CT and MRI sections. She was involved with Oncology Research and collaborative publications. Her special interests are Oncologic, Cardiac and Surgical imaging as well as General Radiology.

Dr. Mark Velleman
MB ChB (Pret), MMed (RadD) (Pret), FCRadD (SA)
Mark Velleman completed his medical and post graduate training at the University of Pretoria.
He is currently in private practice in Pretoria, at Capital Radiology, where his primary responsibility is MR and musculo-skeletal imaging.
He is also a part time lecturer at the University of Pretoria, at the Departments of Radiology, Orthopaedics and section Sports Medicine, and also involved in post graduate training.
He is a founding and currently active member of SAMSIG, and has been involved in organising various musculo-skeletal conferences and meetings.
He has lectured at various radiological, orthopaedic and sports medicine meetings and has also published locally and internationally.

Dr Taryn Brown
MBBCh (Wits), FCRad (Diag) (Wits)
Dr. Taryn Brown completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. After qualifying she accepted a post as radiologist at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. During this time she was involved with registrar training and their preparation for the final examination.Has published both locally and internationally.
Dr. Brown is currently in private practice with Scholtz and De Jager Radiologists in Pretoria. The practice provides radiological services to a wide range of disciplines including hepatobiliary surgery, paediatric surgery neuroimaging and women’s imaging.
Dr. Marianne Kuehnast
MBChB, DA (SA), FCRad (Diag), MMED (Wits), EDINR
Head of Unit MRI and Mammography at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Obtained her undergraduate qualification from the University of Pretoria in 2003 and obtained her Diploma in Anaesthetics in 2006.
Registrar on the training circuit of University of Witwatersrand and qualified as a radiologist in 2013.
Has her MMED qualification and is currently a supervisor and examiner for MMED dissertations.
Reviewer for the European Journal of Radiology.
Examiner for part 1 and part 2 CMSA exams.
Keen interest in Neuroradiology and completed European Diploma in Neuroradiology in 2018.
Also has an interest in general MRI as well as mammography.
Co- opted member of SASNI.

Adelein R. de Clercq

Biography
Dr. Adelein de Clercq is a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering (NWU). She obtained her degree in Biophysics and M.Sc in Medical Physics at Tygerberg Hospital (Stellenbosch University). She has been working the past 30 years in various industries in the field of Radiation Protection and Medical Physics. She has a passion for teaching.
